Taking care of your hair doesn’t always require expensive salon visits. With the right knowledge and a few simple tricks, you can maintain healthy, shiny hair at home. As Jen Atkin, a celebrity hairstylist, says, “Healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp. Use a scalp scrub or massager to exfoliate and stimulate blood flow” (Source: Mane Addicts). Here are some of my favorite DIY hair care hacks that will help you achieve salon-worthy hair without stepping foot in a salon.

    1. Scalp Care: The Foundation of Healthy Hair

A healthy scalp is crucial for healthy hair growth. It’s the foundation from which your hair grows, and taking care of it can lead to stronger, thicker hair.

    Scalp Scrubs

Using a scalp scrub can help remove dead skin cells and product buildup, promoting a healthier scalp. You can make a simple scrub at home using sugar and coconut oil.

    Recipe for DIY Scalp Scrub:

    • 2 tablespoons of sugar
    • 2 tablespoons of coconut oil
    • A few drops of essential oil (like peppermint or tea tree for added benefits)

Mix these ingredients and gently massage the scrub into your scalp for a few minutes before rinsing thoroughly.

I used to struggle with an itchy, flaky scalp until I started using a homemade scalp scrub once a week. The difference was amazing! My scalp felt cleaner, and my hair looked healthier and more vibrant.

Jen Atkin advises, “Healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp. Use a scalp scrub or massager to exfoliate and stimulate blood flow” (Source: Mane Addicts).

A study published in Eplasty found that scalp massage can increase hair thickness and promote hair growth (Source: National Institutes of Health).

    2. Washing Your Hair Properly

Overwashing your hair can strip it of its natural oils, leading to dryness and breakage. Instead, aim to wash your hair two to three times a week.

I used to wash my hair daily, thinking it would keep it cleaner and healthier. However, my hair started to become dry and brittle. After switching to washing it every other day, my hair retained more moisture and felt softer.

Kristin Ess, hairstylist and founder of Kristin Ess Hair, recommends, “Don’t wash your hair every day. Overwashing can strip your hair of its natural oils and lead to dryness and breakage” (Source: The Zoe Report).

A study published in the International Journal of Trichology found that washing hair less frequently can improve scalp health and reduce dryness and breakage (Source: National Institutes of Health).

    3. Deep Conditioning

Deep conditioning helps keep your hair hydrated, strong, and manageable. It’s especially important for those with dry or damaged hair.

    DIY Deep Conditioning Mask

You can make a simple and effective deep conditioning mask at home using ingredients like avocado, honey, and olive oil.

Recipe for DIY Deep Conditioning Mask:

    • 1 ripe avocado
    • 2 tablespoons of honey
    • 2 tablespoons of olive oil

Blend these ingredients until smooth and apply to your hair, focusing on the ends. Leave it on for 30 minutes, then rinse thoroughly.

Once a week, I treat my hair to a homemade deep conditioning mask. It has made my hair feel much softer and healthier, and I’ve noticed significantly fewer split ends.

Ursula Stephen, a celebrity hairstylist, suggests, “Deep condition your hair regularly to keep it hydrated and strong. Use a mask once a week or a leave-in conditioner daily” (Source: Byrdie).

A study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Science evaluated the effectiveness of different hair conditioning products in improving hair strength, shine, and manageability (Source: Journal of Cosmetic Science).

    4. Brushing Your Hair the Right Way

Regular brushing can help distribute your hair’s natural oils, reduce frizz, and improve scalp health. However, it’s important to use the right type of brush.

    Choosing the Right Brush

Invest in a high-quality natural bristle brush. These brushes are gentle on your hair and help distribute oils from your scalp down the length of your hair.

Switching to a natural bristle brush was a game-changer for me. It not only made my hair look smoother and shinier but also reduced the amount of breakage I experienced.

Harry Josh, a celebrity hairstylist, recommends, “Invest in a good quality hairbrush. A natural bristle brush can help distribute your hair’s natural oils and reduce frizz” (Source: Vogue).

A study published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology Symposium Proceedings found that regular hair brushing can help to distribute natural oils, reduce frizz, and improve scalp health (Source: National Institutes of Health).

    5. Limiting Heat Styling

Frequent use of heat styling tools can lead to hair damage, dryness, and breakage. Whenever possible, let your hair air dry and embrace its natural texture.

    Heat Protection

When you do use heat styling tools, always apply a heat protectant spray to minimize damage.

I used to rely heavily on my flat iron and blow dryer, which left my hair feeling dry and damaged. Now, I try to let my hair air dry and only use heat tools for special occasions. My hair is much healthier and shinier as a result.

Chris Appleton, a celebrity hairstylist, advises, “Avoid heat styling as much as possible. When you do use heat, always use a heat protectant spray” (Source: Cosmopolitan).

A study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology found that frequent heat styling can lead to hair damage, dryness, and breakage (Source: National Institutes of Health).

    6. Natural Hair Treatments

    DIY Hair Treatments

Using natural ingredients can be a gentle and effective way to treat your hair. Here are a few DIY treatments you can try at home:

    Coconut Oil Treatment

Coconut oil is excellent for deep conditioning and adding shine to your hair. Warm a small amount of coconut oil and apply it to your hair, focusing on the ends. Leave it on for at least 30 minutes before washing it out.

    Apple Cider Vinegar Rinse

Apple cider vinegar helps to clarify and add shine to your hair. Mix one part apple cider vinegar with two parts water and use it as a rinse after shampooing. Rinse thoroughly with water afterward.

Incorporating natural treatments like coconut oil and apple cider vinegar into my hair care routine has made a noticeable difference. My hair feels softer, looks shinier, and is much easier to manage.

    Conclusion

Maintaining healthy hair doesn’t have to involve expensive salon treatments. By incorporating these DIY hair care hacks into your routine, you can achieve beautiful, healthy hair at home. Remember to prioritize scalp health, wash your hair less frequently, deep condition regularly, use the right brush, limit heat styling, and try natural treatments. As Jen Atkin wisely says, “Healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp” (Source: Mane Addicts).

By taking the time to care for your hair at home, you can enjoy the benefits of healthy, beautiful hair without the need for frequent salon visits.
